Dubai is the leading centre for business and tourism in the Middle East. A city of some 900,000 inhabitants, Is the second largest of the seven emirates which make up the UAE, in this article I will share with you the general Dubai Information.

Geography

Dubai has an area of 3,885 sq. kms and is situated on the banks of the Dubai Creek, which divides the city into Deira and Bur Dubai.

Climate & Clothing

The UAE climate is sub-tropical & arid. Temperatures range from a low of about 10C degrees to a high of 48C degree. Lightweight summer clothing is suitable for most of the year, but sweaters or jackets may be needed for the winter months, especially in the evenings. Compared with certain parts of the Middle East, Dubai has a very relaxed dress code. However, revealing clothing should be avoided. Men should always wear a shirt or top in public. Trunks, swim-suits & bikinis are quite acceptable at the pool or on the beaches. Protection from the glare of the sun is advised and hats or protection for the head is advised when in direct sunlight

Dubai is a business hub of the Middle East and numerous multi-national companies operate from here. Dubai is virtually free from foreign exchange controls, quotas or trade barriers, imposes extremely low import duties, and many products are exempt. The UAE Dirham’s current exchange rate is Dh 3.675 = 1 US Dollar .

Population

Dubai has become the most populous city in the UAE, a large proportion of which are expatriates and, according to the Dubai Development and Investment Authority; the population is 1.3 million people of which about 80% are expatriates.

Culture & Religion

Dubai’s culture is firmly rooted in the Islamic traditions of Arabia. Courtesy and hospitality are among the most highly prized of virtues. Different life-styles are common here. Islam is the official religion of the UAE. Other religions are respected. Churches and temples are also found in Dubai & foreigners are free to practice their own religion. Arabic weddings and other celebrations are colorful occasions of feasting and music. And traditional sports such as falconry and camel racing thrill people.

Languages

Arabic is still the main language of the UAE. However, English is used by many. Knowing few words in Arabic is appreciated.

Transport

Most hotels operate their own buses. Taxis and municipal buses form the main public transport. Visitors and residents alike will find a variety of metered taxis that are clean and readily available.

All government offices are closed on Fridays and Saturdays. Shops and supermarkets open seven days a week, although some start business on Friday’s afternoon prayers.

Banks and Money Exchange

Normal banking hours are from 08:00 hrs to 13:00 hrs, Saturday through to Thursday. Most currencies can be freely converted in Dubai and reliable money exchange outlets are all over the city.

Communications (Etisalat)

Eitsalat, the national telecommunication company, provides an excellent international direct-dialing system. IDD services are also available in hotel rooms. Several hotels rent mobile telephones. Telephone calls within each emirate are free. Cable television, internet and satellite communications are also provided.

Driving

Driving licenses can be arranged locally on producing licenses issued by most Western countries. Infrastructure is excellent and traffic signs are posted in Arabic and English. Speed limits are well marked and strictly enforced.

Custom duties and imports

The award-winning Dubai Duty Free shop offers a varied choice of alcoholic drinks for departing and arriving passengers. Videos and other printed materials are checked on entry. Penalties for illegal importation! Smuggling of drugs are severe.

Entry (visas)

GCC citizens do not need an entry visa, while GCC expatriate residents who meet certain conditions may obtain a non-renewable 3D-day visa on arrival at the approved ports of entry.

Visa requirements for other nationalities vary. It is advisable to check with the immigration department! Consulates! Embassies or travel agencies.

Local time

The UAE is four hours ahead of GMT.
